Pout are a member of the cod family and, like all members of the family, they have three fins which run along the length of their back. They are identified by their rounded bodies, small dark spot at the base of the pectoral fin and a small barbule under the chin. They can easily get confused with their close relative, the Poor Cod. Poor Cod however do not have such rounded bodies, no barbule and leave scales on your hands when handled. Most Pout have a copper coloured back leading to silver-white flanks and belly, often the smaller specimens have dark bands across their bodies.
Pout are frequently caught all year round most often after dark. They can be found at all types of venues but are more commonly caught when fishing from piers and breakwaters. They will readily take most baits but worms and fish will see you getting the best results. Using 2/3 hook flapper rigs with smallish hooks will catch most Pout. Pout don't often grom to large sizes and are not well known to taste great although they can be used in fish pies. However, they do make excellent bait, live or fresh dead, for larger predators such as Conger Eels and Bass.
